Could your laptop or MP3 player soon be run on a fuel cell that lasts for days, instead of just a few hours? Well if some researchers at the University of Southern California have anything to do with it, the answer will be “Yes.” This, according to Science News Online, which reports how a new miniature fuel cell which runs on propane, the same fuel used in your gas barbeque, is under development and has already been tested with some success. The propane, to be effective, needs to be heated to a temperature of 500 degrees Celsius, but once that is done, a small cartridge of liquid propane under moderate pressure can feed a fuel cell for several days. This technology could one day make the energizer bunny look like a party pooper.
