Chances are your next juicy hamburger or steak came from cattle, grown out on the range. But could that same tasty dinner soon come from meat grown in a laboratory. Maybe not anytime soon, but according to Planet Ark, Dutch researchers at Utrecht University in the Netherlands are trying to grow meat in a lab with the goal of feeding millions of people without having to raise and kill livestock. In the process, researchers isolate muscle stem cells that can grow and multiply into muscle cells which can be stimulated and fed nutrients to develop. Actually getting edible meat from the process is still quite a ways off, but since it could provide lots of protein with much less environmental impact, here’s hoping the researchers get bullish results.
