Ever since the 1960’s, environmental groups have led the charge in opposing the widespread use of DDT. So it is a bit surprising to find that today, leaders of groups including Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Fund are doing an about-face and embracing its use to combat Third World malaria. In an interview conducted by the New York Times, World Wildlife Fund spokesman Richard Liroff said “South Africa was right to use DDT” as it “prevented tens of thousands of malaria cases.” A further interview with Greenpeace spokesman Rick Hind also revealed that as far as that group is concerned, quote, “if there’s nothing else and it’s going to save lives, we’re all for it.” So it appears with respect to DDT, the times they are a changin’!
