You’ve heard of designer jeans, but how about designer islands? Well according to the publication More Greener Pastures, such designer islands are now a reality, thanks to inventor Bruce Kania, who strung together a large number of recycled plastic bottles with enough bonding material to hold topsoil, plant seeds, and even shrubs with fully developed root systems. Kania’s bio islands act as floating scrubbers to remove nitrates, ammonia, and phosphates from the water. The islands are also a perfect breeding ground for microbes, as the garbage-collecting organisms produce a biofilm that cleans nutrient run off from farm fields and gobbles up unhealthy metals. Sounds like an island even Gilligan would approve!
