While a number of records were shattered in 2016, like in the summer Olympics, there is now another one making headlines: that of nuclear power plant construction. As reported in Breakthrough News, 2016 proved to be a big year for nuclear power, with 10 new reactors coming online around the world, adding nearly 10 gigawatts of capacity. Last year, in fact, was the largest annual addition of nuclear power since 1990, with new reactors built in China, Pakistan, India, and Russia. Even America got into the act, as the opening of the Watts Bar 2 reactor in Tennessee became the first US reactor to come online in 20 years.
