Assessing the impact of Chernobyl on childrenEncouraging study shows no link between radiation exposure and mental development of children in regionSeptember 14, 2004 by CFACT The accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power facility in 1986 was without a doubt the darkest moment in the technology?s history. Multitudes of Ukranians were exposed to dangerous levels of radiation and had to flee the Gomel region because of the lax standards imposed on the plant?s features by the former Soviet government. Fortunately, however, it appears at least some of the health consequences of the accident may not be passed on to future generations. Writing in the Journal of Epidemiology, Dr. Gad Rennert explains how his researchers at the Carmel Medical Center in Haifa failed to uncover any evidence of health consequences to children due to their exposure from the Chernobyl accident. His study looked at a total of 1629 children, of which 667 came from the highly contaminated Gomel region, 408 from Mogilev and Kiev which were mildly exposed, and 554 from Moscow and St. Petersburg which were not exposed at all. These children were either unborn or up to 4 years old at the time of the accident, but today evidence no mental or physical abnormalities which can be associated with their proximity to the accident. This comes as good news, as previous studies of Japanese survivors of the atomic bombs dropped in World War II showed an increase in mental retardation, and smaller-sized heads, among infants who were exposed to the radiation levels of those attacks. Many feared such would also be the case with the victims of Chernobyl ? but Rennert?s team noted there was no relation between exposure to radiation and such health defects, nor of the measure of intelligence or of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). One thing the researchers did uncover, however, was an increase in the anxiousness among women who were pregnant at the time of the accident. ?It was similar in those who were only 50 km away from the site and in those who were hundreds of kilometers away. What we see is not any influence of the exposure itself but the influence of the trauma that people experienced,? he stated. More research is being conducted on 1,000 individuals who were on clean up teams. Notes Rennert, ?These individuals were put at the highest degree of risk. If they don?t show any consequences of that exposure to low-level radiation, nothing will ever be shown.?
