Gullible Green sailors trapped in the Arctic

Churchville, VA—The naïve advice of ardent activists can kill. Last spring, Paul Beckwith of Sierra Club Canada predicted that the Arctic seas would be ice-free ice this summer. (So did Britain’s BBC network.)  This exciting adventure opportunity attracted a variety of yachts, sailboats, rowboats, and kayaks owners to try sailing the fabled Northwest Passage.

As a former sailboat owner I can understand their excitement, but my heart aches for the agonies they now face. The Arctic sea ice suddenly expanded 60% this fall, after the coldest summer in the modern Alaska temperature record. The passage is now impassable. More than a dozen of the boats are trapped, apparently even including a group of tiny American jet-ski “personal watercraft” that were attempting to cross from the east coast of Russia to the North Atlantic.  Arctic observers are now warning that even Canadian icebreakers might not be able to rescue them.

USCG HealyThe Northwest Passage blog reminds us that fall super storms are a potentially deadly fact in Alaska. “It is only a matter time. . . . Give Mother Nature her due time and she will move billions of tons of sea ice and push it up against the Alaska Arctic coast—effectively closing the door to exit the Arctic ice from western Canada. . . . No icebreakers are going to be able to offer any assistance. Mother Nature is mightier than all the icebreakers put together.”  Note that the Atlantic exit is already problematic.

Helicopter rescues on Arctic ice are incredibly expensive, involving hundreds of miles of flying by copters and crews expensively maintained in that icy and sparsely populated region. Additionally, all the lovely boats become write-offs.

6830234478_4a8ed3e99e_oThe boaters ignored major warning signs. The planet has not warmed appreciably in at least 15 years. NASA told us in 2007 that the Pacific Ocean had shifted into the cool phase of its 60-year cycle and that fact predicted cooler winters until 2030.

Most concerning of all is that the costs of an Arctic sailing mistake are horrendous. Wonderfully preserved hulks of sunken explorers’ ships litter the sea-bottom around the Northwest Passage. Some of the vessels that survived the ice were trapped for as long as three winters. At least one sailboat recently froze into the ice near Svalbard. The captain and his boat were buried under the heavy snow, 100 miles from human habitation. (He actually survived to write a book.)

The risks run by the Arctic boaters are obvious. Modern society is running less obvious risks based on the same sort of naïve advice coming from the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and a host of like-minded “saviors of the planet.” What about the poor and elderly Britons and Germans who have frozen to death in their homes because they couldn’t afford the higher costs of gas and electricity imposed by “renewable fuels”?

What about the millions of Third World mothers and children who die of lung seaicediseases every year as it is politically incorrect to give them access to tiny amounts of kerosene for heating and cooking. The alternative is burning dung and charcoal in indoor, poorly ventilated fires.

Closer to home, what about the millions of young Americans who can’t get jobs in an economy stalled by overpriced “Green” energy and investor uncertainty over the War on Coal?  Inevitably, being gullible carries a price tag. We are just beginning to realize how expensive the naïveté of the environmental movement has become.

  1. jameshrust September 20, 2013 at 1:44 PM

Good point. The environmental movement has posted lies for years about Arctic sea ice and suckered their supporters into making silly attempts at forcing the Northwest Passage. Make the environmental movement pay for the rescues that will cost a fortune.
    James H. Rust, Professor

    • Gear-shone May 14, 2014 at 4:42 PM

Tell that to the Pacific Islanders and Alaskan Inuits who are seeing their villages was away, and sink in melting perma-frost.

  2. alpha2actual September 20, 2013 at 8:01 PM

It is a misconception that the Environmental Movement is benign, well intentioned, and monolithic– it is not. In reality the movement is extremely factionalized and schizophrenic. The legitimate players are the rent seekers, grant chasers, and politicans pandering to a constituency, the Green Lobby.

The True Believers are the Luddites, Malthusians, Narcissistic Xenophobes, Gaia cultists, Margaret Sanger Eugenics disciples, and Pathological Altruists to name but a few. Review your “Silent Spring” and the attending banning and restrictions on the use of DDT. The carnage visited on the inhabitants of the Sub Sahara, South America, and Asia is unconscionable. Read Erlich’s “Population Bomb” and the Club of Rome literature “carrying capacity” is code for destain of inhabitants of Third World countries.. Science is intended to drive policy not the other way around. Policy driven Science misallocates capital but more importantly takes lives.

These modern environmentalists, and I’m including the Global Warming Alarmists, are immoral and inhuman and have racked up a body count that surpasses 100 million and counting, 80% children under five and pregnant women

    • Not You September 24, 2013 at 10:01 PM

They believe Humans are parasites and Gaia won’t be pure until they are extinct. I say, “You first. The rest of us will get along just fine.”

    • JPeden September 27, 2013 at 1:26 AM

Human Doomsday Machines, one and all.

h/t a Southern Sheriff in a James Bond Flick:, “What are you, boy, some kind of Human Doomsday Machine?”

    • Leigh October 14, 2013 at 11:49 AM

That about sums up the whole program. In other words, they say, “there’s way too many of you and just enough of us”.

  3. ClimateLearner September 21, 2013 at 6:29 AM

Good post, mixing compassion and reason. Perhaps the boaters will be more cynical about climate-scarers in future, and perhaps the boaters’ pathetic escapades this summer will help many others see the eco-alarmists in general as contemptible enemies of humanity.

    • Francisco Machado October 4, 2014 at 10:43 PM

You underestimate ideologues. The ice clogging the NW passage was caused by AGW, capitalism, fracking and the NRA. It is an attempt by the one percenters to discredit them, but it will not succeed because they have it on the word of Al Gore (who invented the internet) that the world has gotten warmer.

  4. Eckenhuijsen Smit September 21, 2013 at 12:52 PM

As long as the great ‒eternally lying‒ clown Barry Hussein Obama tells the
world that CO2 is a dangerous gas, that CO2 is dangerously warming the globe
and that CO2 is causing dangerous climate change, he will have dutiful
followers who will believe what he preaches and sail blindly to their death as
shown in their stupid attempt to cross the Arctic’s Northwest Passage.
Arrogant Barry will not learn from this deadly incident!

    • J.P. Katigbak September 24, 2013 at 7:11 PM

The ideological and philosophical doctrine of environmentalism remains persistent, as far as I am concerned. I still suspect utopianism has real motivations behind what I mentioned.

Perhaps it is time to take action once more in challenging such a politically-correct (and mainly leftist) doctrine. – J.P.K.

    • Not You September 24, 2013 at 9:54 PM

Somehow, it will be Bush’s fault. Or maybe ours because we didn’t believe him and do away with CO2 three years ago. Hold your breath everybody!

    • dadame September 24, 2013 at 10:44 PM

You sound like us over here in Australia when we had a socialist government in. Thankfully we booted them out a couple of weeks ago and it has been bliss – no propaganda crap to contend with. Thoughts are with you all and our mantra over the darkest six years in our political history was ‘maintain the rage’………….I did and it worked. God bless you all.

      • egeo September 25, 2013 at 9:29 PM

Fantastic news, Australia has dumped their Union Labor S.I E.U aligned corrupt government and replaced it with a follower of UN S.I Agenda 21 policies government, only a little change can be seen on the horizon at the moment. Time will tell but Kyoto2, Loss & Damage, Common Core/Better Schools, TPP will all define if the strings of control are still be pulled by the same E.U Socialist masters.

The extent of the ice fluctuates. The year before it was smooth sailing thru the Northwest Passage. Our ability to predict the weather isn’t perfect yet, but improves all the time. And yes, the tundra is melting, ask the Inuits. And cut your dumb ass right wing paranoid crap. Obama would be doing a better job if he wasn’t hobbled by a bunch of psychopathic republowcraps! Do some Googling on Global warming instead of sucking up oil company propaganda. All you’re doing is screwing yourself.

  5. James Crooke September 23, 2013 at 10:16 AM

So much for socialism taking care of the people. When are people going to realize that the only people socialism takes care of are the leaders. Every leader of a socialist country has become a multimillionaire at the expense of the people. Look at the President of the United States, His wealth since taking office has grown over 300% should be closer to 400% long before he leaves office.

    • maltesertoo September 25, 2013 at 1:30 AM

Socialist politicians are like that. They enter politics and become rich. The MSM keeps its mouth shut. But let a self made person who became rich through his own personal perspiration touch politics and he will end up in court,

The dummies duped by the left wing myth of global warming might just lose their lives. But then again Darwin laughs from the grave over something like this. Liberalism, socialism, and communism all kill in the name of their ideology! Liberalism just looks for the stupid ones!

    • GardenGnomeLF September 25, 2013 at 3:41 PM

Liberalism is not a good name for them (it is their propaganda). They should be called statists or fascists.

      • Gear-shone May 14, 2014 at 4:44 PM

Fascists and Liberals are diametrically opposed. Liberals are open minded and evidence driven, Fascists are religious conservatives and straight jacketed by dogma.

        • golding4 October 4, 2014 at 9:48 PM

Our dogma is obeying God and believing God, As for you and your kind….who will stop breathing sooner than you think and find yourself cast into outer darkness, hell to you. I have never met a liberal that knew Jesus as savior, they even allow the ungodly in their churches that are just social clubs

  7. Kris September 23, 2013 at 11:46 AM

I think that the jet skiers were rescued at least.
That, and a group of five in a boat trying to show how “ice-free” the arctic had become. 🙂

    • Well Done September 24, 2013 at 6:52 PM

Some of the global warming tourists were rescued? NOT FAIR! Rescue vehicles used up tons of fossil fuels during that rescue. Shouldn’t be allowed. Other “greens” should have to do the rescue using “green” methots.

    • Canuck October 12, 2013 at 1:53 PM

  8. DoomsdayJesus September 23, 2013 at 2:25 PM

The Arctic was ice-free a couple years in the 1950s too, except no one was crying then and they correctly identified it as an exception to the rule.

Also, may want to fix the subtitle.

GLOBAL WARMING – authoritarian, rather than authoritative, science

      • fastboatsailor September 24, 2013 at 7:28 PM

Actually, US nuclear submarines regularly surface at the North Pole, but not because it is ice free. They surface through polynyas – open water (or thin ice) areas) surrounded by pack ice. They are able to surface through ice a couple of feet thick.

    • Well Done September 24, 2013 at 6:53 PM

The arctic was ice free hundreds of years ago, as well. That’s how those sailing ships of old got trapped in the ice. They sure didn’t sail there while there was ice there.

      • Not You September 24, 2013 at 10:16 PM

From my research, it seems that the Northwest Passage has been open at least five times since European explorers have been here, sometimes for several years in a row. It is probably a safe bet that it was also ice free when Greenland was green and a Viking outpost.

  9. deadeyedan September 23, 2013 at 6:22 PM

This is not the first time zealots have been thwarted by Arctic reality:

And there have been plenty of others – one such actually recorded a Northern Hemisphere (if it can be established as official) record cold temperature of 103F below zero. Other expeditions have found out the hard way that once water/ice get into your gear you are cooked.

CLIMATEGATE – (now I, II & III plus FAKEGATE) – the revelation that the pseudo-scientists at East Anglia University know just as much about the atmosphere as Harvard law professors know about the Constitution

    • BOBT12 December 31, 2013 at 3:20 PM

      You are on target.

“The Climate Research Unit (CRU) had been regarded by
many as one of the most credible atmospheric institutions in the world, but
with the revelation of the email exchanges, their credibility was reduced to
junk science. The emails reveal that the world’s leading climate scientists
were working together to block Freedom of Information request to review their
      data; marginalize dissenting scientists, manipulate the peer-review process;
and obscure, massage, or delete inconvenient temperature readings.”-Brian
      Susman, “CLIMATEGATE”.

Hahahah…. Where in the data does it say that the Arctic will be ice free??

Sea Ice News Volume 4 Number 6: Arctic sea ice has most definitely turned the corner – Maslowski is falsified

    • Well Done September 24, 2013 at 6:56 PM

Hahaha yourself… if the NW passage is free, that means it’s “ice free”. Nobody has said the entire Arctic will be ice free. And your link is propaganda, there is WAY more ice than there was at this time last year and Arctic ice was at a minimun in the 1930’s. Don’t link to propaganda here, we know better. Go back to

      • JPeden September 27, 2013 at 1:34 AM

The link to WUWT is not propaganda. Some moron named Maslowski made a prediction for the Arctic to be ice free this year. WUWT notes the failure of the prediction, and agrees with your facts.Check it out.

    • Gear-shone May 14, 2014 at 4:47 PM

Tell that to the guy who single handed his sailboat around North and South America two years ago. One cold season in one area is not good statistical evidence. Science doesn’t cherry pick evidence. Half the area of summer ice is gone, and 2/3’s its mass. Fact.

      • dbward May 14, 2014 at 6:09 PM

“Science doesn’t cherry pick evidence’? Very funny! Remember the East Anglia fraud to say nothing of the methods Mann of Penn State (who deserves to be in the State Pen) used to create his bogus ‘Hockey Stick.

The world of the Utopians will be wonderful for select elites, but miserable for the rest of us. The ones lucky enough to survive at all, that is.

  16. GardenGnomeLF September 25, 2013 at 3:40 PM

Wealth and prosperity come from work, luck, intelligence, skill, corruption or a combination of them.

The more power you give the government the more it draws the corrupt. One source of corruption is a mighty fine goal for these people.

Once all the power is in a statist’s hands, then the only way to prosperity is corruption. That is why these places always fail.

Ignorant people easily fall for it though: a statist says give me power and I’ll protect you! Actually it does work for the small amount who are politically connected (like today’s media). The rest go without toilet paper (see Venezuela).

    • dkludson December 28, 2013 at 7:40 PM

Yep, that’s why we call the counties around DC Versailles. The big government corruption is working for all of them and they don’t even realize they’re crooks. I’m just running a restaurant in Fairfax County they tell themselves, but they KNOW it’s dirty money just as much as people who used to serve gangsters in the 1920’s.

    • TheCarMan January 11, 2014 at 11:19 AM

I’ve heard it said (and I believe it to be all too true) that in Captalism the wealthy become powerful, and in Socialism the powerful become wealthy. The more power we give (through votes) to statists, the more powerful THEY become — not you. The more wealth WE get to keep, the more powerful we the people become (the greatest threat to a statist).

  17. Mkjon September 25, 2013 at 3:56 PM

The general population needs to be more informed about the small amount of CO2 (less than 0.04%) that is in air. Ten times that amount in air would be beneficial for plant growth.
It is unbelievable that so many people think that that small amount of CO2 can do so much damage to the climate.

  18. JPeden September 27, 2013 at 1:20 AM

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ANTARCTIC SUMMER 2013, they moved south !!

” A Ship of Fools”, On Xmas eve they got trapped in …ICE

The Australasian Antarctic Expedition, led by Chris Turney
      of the University of NSW,
was to prove the East Antarctic ice sheet is melting. Its website spoke
alarmingly of “an increasing body of evidence” showing “melting
and collapse from ocean warming”. Instead, rescue ships and a helicopter,
all belching substantial carbon emissions, have had to be mobilised to pluck
those aboard the icebreaker MV Akademik Schokalskiy from their plight, stuck in
what appears to be, ironically, record amounts of ice for this time of year.

Instead of believing flawed computer models (garbage in = garbage out ) saying the ice was melting, they could have just google’d Antarctic ice growth
…or phoned the people working there!!

  27. Gear-shone May 14, 2014 at 4:40 PM

Who pays for this ludicrous site? Shell Oil Company and the Koch Brothers? There is overwhelming evidence of Global warming going on. In California, we didn’t even have a winter this winter, it was so warm. And swimming pool, which are excellent indicators of average temperatures, were almost ten degrees warmer than normal, 62 degrees vs. 52 degrees, in late December. Let’s face it, there are floods in some areas, droughts in others, and storms the like which is unheard of in my 67 year lifetime. I mean, 26 inches of rain in Pensacola Florida in 24 hours! While the East is having the coldest winter in decades, there wasn’t enough snow at the Olympics, forcing the Russians to make artificial snow. And the weather in Alaska was abnormally warm this winter. Right now we are having the second, 90 degrees, two week heat wave we’ve had in California this Spring.

    • heatherGirl September 15, 2014 at 12:27 PM

So then explain why even the UN climate change report is trying to explain the total lack of warming for the past decade………

      • Gear-shone September 15, 2014 at 12:50 PM

Explain my foot, honey. Google Global warming, Google evidence of global warming. Everyday, check out Environmental news, BBC News and The Guardian are good sources . The sea level is rising. The CO2 is causing the oceans to become acidified, the shell making animals are having difficulty making shells, and the coral reefs are dying. The jet stream is going haywire, and heat records, consecutive days of record breaking heat, are being set each year. Google North Pole Ice cap. It’s getting thinner. Jeez. I wonder what planet you’re living on??

  28. heatherGirl September 15, 2014 at 12:21 PM

They should have allowed Darwinian natural selection deal with these people……. rescuing them has polluted the gene pool.

We have now allowed useful idiots to survive and reproduce.
