Just how much is the Endangered Species Act costing American taxpayers?  Well for the year 2000, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reported that federal and state expenditures were around 600 million dollars.  But according to a new report by the group, PERC, these numbers are grossly underreported, and the actual government costs for endangered species are as much as four times higher, or 2.4 billion dollars per year. This does not even include the costs to private landowners, which may bring the whopping total to over three and a half billion per year.  Since only 15 endangered species have ever been delisted, and most of these were because of original listing errors, it appears the ESA is hardly getting much bang for the buck.
