Should liberal environmental principles like so-called sustainable development or “ecological citizenship” be made central to the curricula of our nation’s universities?  Well according to a recent article by Alex Standish on Tech Central Station, that is exactly what some environmental leaders are seeking to do.  At a recent conference in New York City, the proponents asserted that colleges have neglected the ethical dimensions of the environmental debate, and want to see all faculty incorporate environmental values into their research and teaching.  But Standish argues that since these ethics are often political in nature, such curricula would inhibit independent thought, and not enable students to trust and use their own judgment.
