The burning of coal to produce electricity has long been a subject of concern to environmentalists.  But if a new project, called Futuregen, proves successful, many of these coal-critics may be changing their tune.  This, according to the New York Times, which recently reported that the Department of Energy has announced plans to create an experimental coal power plant that could extract non-polluting hydrogen to generate electricity.  Even better say experts, it could pump carbon dioxide deep into the earth to avoid a buildup of the gas in the atmosphere.  And with the cost projected to be only 10 percent greater than a conventional plant, its seems this new power facility may be generating not just electricity, but also good will.
