What do you do when a gang of seabird-killing seals drives off a local bird population that is popular with tourists? Well if you’re in Lambert’s Bay, South Africa, you simply call in a surfer, an artist, and a flock of fake plastic birds to save the day. Believe it or not this story is true, and it occurred recently when a number of rogue bulls from a seal colony started devouring a local flock of Cape Gannets, some twenty thousand of them in fact. This action, of course, drove off the birds which are a popular tourist attraction. But by employing a local artist to create fake, life-sized sculptures of gannets to lure them back, and using the services of a local surfer to ward off the seals, the birds have returned in droves, and the local tourist industry is flying high again.
