Are new efforts by federal lawmakers to quarantine, control or kill so-called ‘invasive species’ a smart move? Well according to Dana Joel Gattuso of the National Center for Public Policy Research, such invasive species regulations are of dubious environmental value. Comments Gattuso: “Most people don’t realize that common things like soybeans, kiwi fruit, wheat and nearly all cattle are examples of so-called invasive species. In fact, several states such as Maryland, Vermont, California and South Dakota honor non-native species as their State Flower or State Bird. The key problem with government’s handling of this issue is that it takes a simplistic view, bundling all the species together and exaggerating their effects on ecosystems and commercialism.”
