New York City is accustomed to having actors, singers and virtuosos of all shapes and sizes grace its celebrated boroughs. But recently the Big Apple played host to a different kind of celebrity – this one from the animal world, a beaver named Jose. Jose, you see, is receiving all sorts of attention because she marks the first time a beaver has been spotted in New York City in over 200 years. Beavers used to be plentiful in the 1700’s in New York, but were hunted to the point that they all but vanished east of the Mississippi River by 1800. Now with the cleaning up of the Bronx River however, Jose has found a new, hospitable place to live, and New Yorkers everywhere are thrilled about their latest furry transplant.
