Are organic foods healthier and better for the environment? While many may believe so, such is not the contention of a provocative new book called “The Truth About Organic Foods” by Alex Avery of the Center for Global Food Issues. Comments Avery: “My book exposes some of the myths surround organic foods. It reveals, for example, how organic chicken has 300% more Salmonella than regular chicken, and university studies have found more bacteria in organic veggies than those grown conventionally. And as for being better for the planet, giving up synthetic fertilizer would require sacrificing millions of square miles of wildlife habitat to make more manure. It’s high time that consumers know the truth about organic food.”
