Most people understand that wars and conflicts take their toll on human lives, but many don’t realize these tragedies also take their toll on wildlife as well. A case in point is Nepal’s Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros whose numbers have been ravaged due to heavy fighting in the region between government soldiers and Moaist insurgents. In 2001, a plan to rescue the endangered rhinos appeared to be succeeding, but conservation officials were fired on and had to withdraw from protecting the animals. When fighting ceased, the rhinos numbers, which had been at 70, had been whittled down to just three. Today, fighting still remains troublesome, but at least when it comes to saving rhinos, both sides have happily decided to declare a truce.
