While all the attention about climate change focuses on a warmer earth, many scientists are starting to worry about just the opposite, namely global cooling. This, according to editor Lawrence Solomon of Canada’s National Post who reports that the sun has recently been experiencing a major drop-off in sunspot activity, and this could mean we are moving into a very icy time. Solomon notes that during the so-called Little Ice Age of the 1400 and 1500’s, astronomers saw less than 1% of normal sunspots, and that other times of low activity also corresponded to unusual cold. Since these times were marked by shorter growing seasons and other hardships related to frigid temperatures, maybe a little global warming doesn’t sound too bad after all.
