Recycling is often touted as an important means of helping the planet. But according to a recent article in the Washington Times by policy expert Iain Murray, recycling also brings with it another interesting environmental dilemma, namely its carbon footprint. Yes, believe it or not, while many champion recycling as an important means of fighting global warming, the truth of the matter is, according to Murray, recycling is actually a carbon positive process because of the energy, emissions, and traffic generated throughout its operation. When one also considers de-inking and sanitizing recovered paper is less carbon neutral than simply chopping down a tree and replacing it, perhaps it’s time, Murray maintains, to re-evaluate recycling’s green credentials.
