Armed guerrillas are known to be a menace to civilians, but how about to wildlife?  Well it appears that such renegade militias are indeed taking their toll on the animal kingdom and nowhere is this more pervasive than in the Congo.  According to a report issued by the U.N. and Interpol, armed guerrillas are actually threatening the other gorillas of the ape variety who inhabit the region.  They are doing this overtly by illegally trafficking gorilla bush meat on the black market, and inadvertently by dislocating large numbers of people and driving them into gorilla habitat.  The report warns that the great apes may disappear altogether in the Congo basin by the mid 2020’s, unless this guerrilla warfare against gorillas is put to rest.
