Are unions using pension funds to advance policies favored by environmentalists to get the best return for their members? Well the unfortunate answer appears to be the former, according to Ivan Osorio of the Competitive Enterprise Institute, who had this to say: “Today, some labor unions such as the Service Employees International Union appear to be placing their members’ retirement security at risk. They’re using pension fund investments to advance environmental and other causes at public company shareholder meetings. But in doing so, they negelect their primary responsibility as pension fund managers, which is to increase the value of the funds.”
