“We can’t just drill our way to lower gas prices,” President Obama told an audience four years ago at the University of Miami. Like this year, it was an election year and Obama was running for re-election. Later in his speech, he added: “anybody who tells you that we can drill our way out of this problem doesn’t know what they’re talking about, or just isn’t telling you the truth.”
He scoffed at the Republicans for believing that drilling would result in $2 gasoline—remember this was when prices at the pump, in many places, spiked to more than $4 a gallon: “You can bet that since it is an election year, they’re already dusting off their three-point plans for $2 gas. I’ll save you the suspense: Step one is drill, step two is drill, step three is drill.”
Well, Mr. President, you owe America, and the Republicans, an apology. Your snarky comments were wrong. The Republican’s supposed three-point plan, which you mocked, was correct.
I don’t expect our presidents to be energy experts, but they should be advised by the brightest minds in the business. Obviously, Obama surrounds himself with ideologues.
Today, on the four-year anniversary of another of Obama’s inaccurate predictions, we have drilled our way to $2 gas—despite the fact that he has supported the anti-fossil-fuel movement’s efforts to impede and block oil production.
In fact, due to American ingenuity and initiative that successfully combined horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, we are producing so much it has resulted in a global glut of oil and a national average gasoline price of $1.70. According to AAA, the cost per gallon has been below $2 for 25 days.
In his message in Miami, he bragged: “under my administration, America is producing more oil today than at any time in the last eight years.” Yes, that is true. But it is not because of Obama’s support. A Congressional Research Service report released last year found that since fiscal year 2010 oil production on federal lands is down by 10%, while it up 89% on state and private lands. Obama aligns himself with those who want to “keep it in the ground”—who count his “no” decision on the Keystone pipeline as their biggest victory to date.
Funny, in the 2012 speech he said: “Over the last three years, my administration has approved dozens of new pipelines, including from Canada.” That was then.
He then launched into his requisite rhetoric on renewables: “The United States consumes more than a fifth of the world’s oil. But we only have 2% of the world’s oil reserves. That means we can’t just rely on fossil fuels from the last century. … Because of investments we’ve made, the use of clean renewable energy in this country has nearly doubled. … As long as I’m President, I will not walk away from the promise of clean energy. I will not cede the wind or solar or battery industry to China.”
Wait! Wind and solar do not reduce our need for foreign oil. Wind turbines and solar panels do produce electricity—albeit ineffectively, inefficiently, and uneconomically. But we do not have an electricity shortage. We do not import electricity. We do not make electricity from oil. Automobiles run on gasoline made from oil—for which the president’s new budget includes a $10 a barrel tax that translates to about 24 cents per gallon.
Four years ago, in Miami, he said: “…high gas prices are like a tax” straight out everyone’s paycheck. Yet today, he wants to increase the nearly 45 cents a gallon we currently pay in taxes to 69 cents.
Obama’s false “We can’t just drill our way to lower gas prices” prediction was made during an election year. During this election year, is a good time to be reminded that, without government “investment,” we did drill our way to lower gas prices. At the same time, taxpayer-supported renewable projects continue to go bankrupt and be shuttered—taking with them our money and the jobs they promised to create.
Yes, Mr. President, you owe America an apology.
I would be MUCH happier if he just resigned or disappeared into the mist somewhere over Hawaii.

Four years ago , he was against drilling. He could have cared less about gasoline prices and what the average American was suffering from the prices at the pump. Today, it is a different story. Watch him taking credit for the cheap gas! Agree with tompro97, below my post! The sooner, the better!
Obama takes credit on the drilling but it was all private drilling.
He did nothing.
He has only stifled growth in American added massive debt and shipped jobs overseas. His job was to take down American from the inside.
When’s the last time you heard a community organizer as president, no one even knows what that is. But it’s a person who uses govt money to manipulate the masses- but they create nothing, they do not grow anyting and they do not create Busienss.
I read where a little old lady in Chicago said the locals there (community organizers) wanted her home it was considered a slum. She said it was old but it was where she lived for 60 yrs and it was fine. They forced her out, built high rises and housed welfare. It’s now a place where drug addict live and the area is horrific. The only people who made money were the people who had the inside connection with the community organizers! It had nothing to do with creating a better envireonment. It was tit for tat for inside money making- We see this often with all sorts of names they call to beautify the area- at the govts expense. But the people walking away with lots of $$ are the people on the inside, but these communities don’t prosper- if they did they would have made the news.
Back to the oil and gas deal:
Infact he stifled jobs and gave money to other nations to drill in same locations USA could not drill (he would not permit USA drilling) Why are we giving other nations $$ to drill?
We should never ever give any money to another nation, if we do they have to pay us back with interest for the loan and it has to be paid back with something we need, could be oil could be something else. But other nations need to pay fair if they want a loan from us.
Other naitons fail because they are not free and America keeps giving these same nations money and it is for nothing. Until their govts change their people will continue to suffer. We can’t fund the world.
Example: China makes allot of crap but it does not last and fills our landfills, you have to buy 10 toasters instead of 1 really good made one. Where’s the activists on the crap in the landfill that is broken and from China? What about 10 chips coming for 10 toasters when 1 could have been made in America by Americans to last?
Israel- they invent so much it’s amazing, they invent medical treatments and Arabs go there for treatment, look it up.
America- used to make things but instead we impose regulations on comapanise so they shut down and we have giving good jobs overseas. Then you see massive recalls on everything, it’s made cheap and with no regulations. Why do we have regulations on USA jobs but no regulations on import?
Back to China, they have toxic waste drywall, they put melamine in food and dog food and it kills dogs and kids, and the list goes on. And why do we even trade with communists? I mean really? Why do we fund communism? We should only trade with like kinded people. It’s thier nations that are poor because of the govts (Marxists, comfy, dictators) they all can’t do a darn thing but they have a hand out – by the free nations.
Nothing will change until other naitons wise up and get rid of this govts.
Tired of American taking the blame and in the same breath asked to doll out money!
If we are so bad then why did Middle East need 150 billion dollars- they wish us dead and we give them money? That’s insanity to the nth degree.
Infact to the left, for those who hate capitalism, then who is paying for all these naitons? It’s capitalism, people who work in the USA- without USA workers and companies their would not be any tax to save to donate to these other nations. So do the math.
Our hard working Americans fund these other nations and it would be wise for them to be great full. Because right now with 92 million out of work, the first to be cut is the exported dollars, we are broke and without collecting tax you can’t aid any nation no matter how you want to do this.
Also for those who hate corporations last time I checked the poor man did not start a company or create a venture. So quit ripping the Busienss man they work hard to put a company together. If you think you can do it then do it. Most of the blabber mouths who claim they need more wages should really start their own venture and they can pay themselves any wage they want. So quit ripping the Busienss man.
I am tired of people ripping on the business man.. The left never rips not the international business man such as the Arabs or the Russians who sell oil and they make a profit- a hearty Profit!
Time for America to tell our current leader, you lied and quit giving money to other nations, infact start with the Middle East. We want our 150 billion back. We want other nations to have to follow same regulations of all products they import or don’t sell to us. So that means their workers have to work no more than so many hours, they have to supply health insurance, they have to have OSHA required rules.
Also pass a law that all USA companies on USA soil with 100% USA workers, your corporate federal tax is cut in half for life for current and new ventures and size does not matter, if you have 1 person company or 1000. If all USA workers on USA soil you get a federal tax break. This will allow many jobs to start.
People take your naiton back, shut down the bad leaders and get the ones in office who say
1) check my history, nothing is redacted, I have nothing to hide
2) I love the nations more than life itself
3) we will follow our American laws and constitution
4) you keep your guns
5) yes a wall will be built and now- just like the Great Wall of china, the areas with biggest problem wall goes up there first
6) our vets get care- all the care they need and now, they can go to private docs anywhere no restrictions
7) all senators who voted for oabama care you have to take this care and your fancy senator care goes to a vet.
8) president pays for his own vacations, no ride along groupies, security is provided but he pays for his own vacations.
9) White House is open to public again, this is out house
10) IRS will be separated into 4 regions and thier books audited
11) everyone that works for govt is iris scanned, fingerprinted and drug tested, you fail drug test you lose job immediately.
This is a start.
Gosh mr. resident, ever heard of supply and demand?
What a concept, eh.
You might try reading some Smith, Mises or Thomas Sowell before you attempt to “run” a country. Of course if your intent was to run a country into the ground, well I guess you might be on the right track.
Reading those authors means he might actually have to attend a College. Good luck.
When Romney ran for president, I attempted to inform the Romney campaign that the cost of gas and oil which was around $4 per gallon could be reduced to about $2 per gallon. That $2 per gallon savings would be a great stimulus for the economy. However, Obama and his energy policies of restrictive regulations and his attempt to make gas and oil as high is possible was choking the average US citizen. I observed many citizens at the gas station who would only pump a gallon or two into their cars because they didn’t have enough money for other necessities. That $4 per gallon resulted in a stagnate economy since all transportation costs resulted in costs for every activity and service. The $2 per gallon reduction in costs has provided a stimulus financed by private funding and not tax payer funding. It has resulted in a savings of about $180 billion per year to the US economy. If Obama would have been intelligent, he would have promoted oil and gas independence. That independence and a quicker drop in fuel costs would amount to over $700 billion in stimulus in the last term of office and the economy would be much further advance than it is now. Of course, Obama has taken credit for this lessor costs and the improvement in the economy even though he had no part but instead attempted to prevent the growth.
Geez, now they hayden Obama for low gas prices. He could resurrect Reagan from the grave and they’d still be hayden.
Best,
D
USA self sufficient in oil and gas keeps Americans working.
Notice all the towns who drill are breaking records in jobs! Brings in workers who need housing, food, insurance, gas, they go to movies, they eat out, they buy clothes and more- the spin off is enormous. The tax collected on goods and services sold helps the city and state of drilling. The workers pay employment tax too!
Also the more we use our own resources we are not bringing in big ships of oil.
Those ships are high jacked, they spew smog and they also are loaded with corruption from international nations. International nations wiht high oil and gas prices use the excess to fund terrorism- pure and simple.
Saudia Arabia has no other product other than under the sand and they are running out of water- boo hoo.
Middle East is loaded with corruption and hate and don’t get me started on CHina and RUssina. What these governments do to their people is horrific.
I know the lower oil and gas prices does hurt USA research and development. But in the long run this may make drilling inroads for smarter drilling practices.
Also why is Obama giving money to Brazil and other nations to drill on our coast but shutting down USA rigs on same coast? It’s because it’s to give other nations a edge while bringing down AMerica.
The only reason we have the oil and gas we do now is because all of it is on private land and Obama can’t do anything about that.
So when it comes to jobs, America private enterprise figured it out- not the govt.
Govt stifles growth with massive regulations.
Govt will impose Union rules and other rules on federal drilling and gas but the imports have no restrictions. Why do we allow any imports who don’t follow the SAME regulations imposed on our own drilling? Ask your senator.
As far as I am concerned, international oil needs to be slowed, it will slow down some terrorists, that was the case till Obama gave another Middle East nation 150 billion! Yes 150 billion, but we have zero money for our troops and vets. How does that math work???????
