Around 100 citizen activists turned out to participate in the “2nd Cairn Lighting Against Wind Turbines” in Cape May, New Jersey, this weekend. The event, which was organized by Protect our Coast NJ and assisted by CFACT, featured numerous speakers and the formation of a dramatic “whale tail” lit up on the beach.
CFACT President, Craig Rucker, spoke to the crowd about some of the positive developments that are happening around the nation in the fight to save whales. “I want you to know,” said Rucker, “that your efforts here in Cape May are being seen by others around the nation. They’re inspiring others, like those in Oregon, to take up the fight against offshore wind and it’s making an impact. You are gumming up the works of those trying to industrialize our coasts.”
Rucker was joined by others who spoke to the crowd including New Jersey State Senator Michael Testa, Former New Jersey Superior Court Judge Mike Donahue, Cape May County Commissioner Melanie Collete, CEO of the New England Fisherman’s Stewardship Association Jerry Leeman, Executive Director of the Long Island Fishing Association Bonnie Brady, and Protect our Coast representatives Rose Willis, Jamie Steiert and Trudy Getler.
After the speakers finished their brief statements, many in the crowd began chanting “Save Whales, Stop Windmills” and heading down to the water to form the outline of a whale tail in the sand. As the sun began to set, lights were held up by the citizens creating a striking image of a whale tail that was captured by drone camera and sent out on Facebook. The Cairn lighting was done in a show of solidarity with other “anti-wind, save the whale” activities taking place during the same time in Norway and Scotland.
