Could a promising form of renewable energy be floating on the top of your unkept pool? Maybe so, as interest in slimy green algae is making quite a splash. This, according to Environment and Energy Publishing’s Greenwire, which reports how algae can be grown in fresh or brackish water, and requires only CO2, sunlight and fertilizer to double in volume every day. When ready, it can be harvested to produce oil for biofuels, as well as material used for ethanol and plastics. The current focus is on finding the best way to grow algae cheaply and quickly, but with possibilities ranging from open ponds to plastic tubes that hang from the ceiling to soak up light, algae may be one “green” answer to our energy needs.
