CFACT Works to Protect People, Livestock, and Wildlife in Africa

CFACT is back in Africa continuing its longtime project to protect lions while simultaneously making the lives of African ranchers better. CFACT provided critical resources to 20 bomas (traditional cattle enclosures) in the village of Sinya, Tanzania. African Hut and Bomas in Tanzania CFACT has had a long-term project that installs lights on the perimeter of cattle grazing land. These lights flash in such a way that they keep the lions away from the cows, which are a major investment for the locals. Historically, when their livestock have come under attack, the owners will retaliate against every lion pride in the [...]

Driessen Fellow Organizes Tree Planting

The world is a little bit greener today thanks to the work of CFACT Driessen Fellow Victoria Sellhausen and her student group from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.   Recently the group organized a tree planting in Downer Woods near the school. Together they spent the afternoon picking out the “perfect” oak tree and identifying a location to display the magnificent hardwood. Being carful to follow department of agriculture guidelines on how to transplant trees from a container into the ground, the students are confident they will be able to come back to this site for many years to come to see its [...]

University of Houston-Downtown Cleans Up the City

University of Houston Downtown Driessen Fellow La’Vonte Holt led a group of students to make the city of Houston a little better for everyone, especially the children who attend Booker T Washington High School. This part of Houston is plagued with piles of garbage and drug paraphernalia. The cleanup of the street surrounding the school, which led to the removal of more than a dozen lawn bags of trash, took several hours of their Saturday but the reward of knowing that the children would be a little safer was worth it. As La’Vonte said, “The [area] was filled with things no [...]

Liberty University CFACT Cleans Up Virginia

Liberty University, the nation’s largest evangelical Christian university, is home to one of CFACT’s many vibrant campus groups. This past semester our campus group there took it upon themselves to put stewardship of the planet into action by cleaning up the beautiful nature preserve at Percival’s Island.  This island, located along the James River in eastern Lynchburg, is home to many of North America’s most beloved species including the Bald Eagle. All too often tourists are careless with their trash while hiking the numerous trails leaving behind a less than pristine environment. Students spent several hours doing cleanup. Julia Heath, our [...]

CFACT at University of Houston-Downtown Helps Plants Trees Ahead of Earth Day

University of Houston-Downtown got seven new trees this week thanks to Dreissen Fellow La’Vonte Holt. This 40 acre urban university, a part of the University of Houston system, boasts a student population of over 15,000 students. In what was thought to be a relatively easy thing to get approved turned into a battle of perseverance but La’Vonte prevailed despite the City of Houston bureaucracy’s best attempts to have nothing done by not returning calls for months or sending CFACT personnel on wild goose hunts to find the right person to approve an attempt to donate some trees to the city. This [...]

University of Houston Students Clean up the City

Students from the University of Houston, the third largest university in the state of Texas with 47,000 students, lead by CFACT Driessen Fellow Gadai Bulgac, set out to get at least a portion of their city looking a little better.  Tired of their local city council and mayor being unresponsive to the problem of rampant littering in the area these students, in a traditional conservative fashion, took it upon themselves to do something about it. Gadai said about the two hour event that spanned from the UH Student Union to MacGregor Park, “we want to make a positive impact on the [...]
