The end of the world just got serious.
Global warming, we are told, has taken its toll on the world’s most fabulous fungus.
On the eve of the winter solstice, as the Mayan calendar ran out, the NY Times reported that yields of that most pungent fungus, the black diamond itself, the $1,200 per pound Périgord truffle is in decline and it’s your fault!
According to the Times:
A team of scientists writing in the British journal Nature says that part of that decline appears to be linked to climate change. They found that the French and Spanish black truffle harvest correlated closely with summer rains, and that the truffle habitat had suffered over the last few decades from hotter summers and less precipitation. That trend is expected to continue, according to most climate models.
How sensitive this fungus must be! After all, the temperature data the UN’s IPCC relies on from NOAA shows only .74 degrees of warming over the entire second half of the 20th century and the UK’s Met Office data shows no warming for the last 16 years. So if they’ve had some dry weather in the south of France and the oaks and hazelnuts have indeed entered into competition with the truffles for rainfall, who’s to blame? Is it you, with your greedy free market prosperity, automobiles, refrigeration, electronics, heating and air conditioning? Let’s give freedom a pass. You’ve had about as much power over rainfall in France as the Mayan calendar did today to end the world.
You’d have to have drunk deeply of the global warming Kool-Aid to conclude that the French dry spell was caused by a global temperature increase that hasn’t even managed a full degree. Even that little, almost three quarters of a degree increase may turn out to be less than reported due to siting problems with temperature recording stations.
Let’s remind those who have fallen into line with the IPCC’s scariest end of times predictions, that politically correct UN science is based on computer models of future temperature increases. Any substantial climate effects have yet to occur. Three quarters of a degree is extremely stable and well within the bounds of natural variation. Attributing storms, droughts, pestilence, floods, or any other plagues of such biblical proportions as a fall off in fancy mushroom yields, occurring right now, today, to global warming is propaganda. It is unworthy of any serious scientific publication. It is not worthy of the New York Times, falling a good deal short of “news that is fit to print.”
Has anyone, we wonder, given much thought to potential economic reasons for the fall off in black truffle yields? “The truffle market,” the Times notes, is “notoriously opaque, with just one family-owned company, Urbani Tartufi, based in Spoleto, Italy, controlling about three-quarters of the truffle trade.” Could it be that with the French tax burden high enough to drive iconic French actor Gérard Depardieu to surrender his French passport and flee to Belgium, that those with pigs sniffing $1,200 per pound mushrooms out of the ground might not be reporting every last ounce of fungus they find to the authorities?
Ever since Al Gore and the rest ramped up the warming scare, the media has published a steady stream of prejudiced press releases from radical NGOs as though they were scientific fact. Yes, “prejudice,” as in “occurs without… knowing or examining the facts.” This type of unscientific publication does a disservice to the public whenever it appears in the media. When it shows up in scientific journals it is worse.
Marc Morano of CFACT’s Climate Depot news and information service recently released a very timely report which does a thorough job of debunking the false link between climate change and extreme weather. It is time for the media to stop reporting shallow climate scare stories as fact. For starters the media must acknowledge that climate and weather are not the same.
The world didn’t end today, but maybe the Mayans gave us a substantial enough portion of apocalypse to sate us for a while. We survived the Mayans, Y2K, Harold Camping, medieval fears of the year 1,000 and the rest. We’ll even somehow weather the black truffle scare of 2012. Let’s call on the media to make a New Year’s resolution for 2013 to stop scaring the public with climate propaganda stories and start showing us some respect.

As if we didn’t have enough to worry about.
I have just witnessed a black truffle market in Lalbenque, France. The baskets of truffles were overflowing compared to last year. No scarcity this year. For many generations – well before the obsession with pinning everything of ‘Climate Change’ – the French trufflers have known that the amount of rain during the summer is critical to the success (or otherwise) of the the truffle harvest.
There is much concern about violence in the country by deranged youth. One possible reason may be the continuous bombardment of a catastrophic future due to burning fossil fuels by the media, politicians, celebrities, etc. that is poisoning the minds of our young people about any future for the planet. The world’s wealth increases yearly due to the innovations of our population and the discovery of new resources for improving the life of the plantet’s inhabitents. We should be looking toward the future with optimism; not dispair. Shame on those profiting on bad news.
But we have to worry about – https://nutrisbook.com/rexavar-product/
