Secrecy abounds around the monster offshore wind (OSW) project proposed by Dominion Energy. In this case it is all about the threat to the severely endangered North Atlantic Right Whales.
The Dominion Energy offshore wind project is the largest, riskiest, and costliest public works project ever undertaken in Virginia history.
Dominion proposes to build a huge amount of wind and solar generating capacity, together with retiring all of its fossil fueled generators, with almost none of the enormous storage capacity that is required to make the renewables viable.
Dominion says they are doing a lot of reliability analysis. Clearly that analysis has yet to find its way into their Integrated Resource Plans.
They didn’t expect Virginia property owners directly affected by the pipeline to show up, advocating for their rights. The property owners’ message was simple: “Pipeline yes, eminent domain no.”
South Carolina and Georgia blocked pipelines when companies sought to intrude on private land via eminent domain. Will Virginians revolt over the Dominion pipeline?
Using eminent domain to bludgeon farmers into submission is not the tactic of a responsible corporate citizen, but that of a bully.
